Taiwan is opposing the proposed international ban on fishing for bluefin tuna. Tsai Jih-yao, Vice Director of the Fisheries Administration, said that a better method to help preserve fish stocks was to set quotas for individual countries. He added that he hoped that the fishing of bluefin tuna would continue under the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). Monaco lobbied 175 CITES members to agree on the global ban, which will be decided in Qatar in March. Lin Han-chou, Secretary-General of the Tungkang Fisheries Association, joined in the protests, adding that banning the catching of the fish would severely hurt the livelihood of Taiwanese fishermen. Japan has also objected to the ban, while France has asked for a delay. |
