South Korea’s Samsung C&T Corporation has clinched a deal to build Singapore’s first LNG terminal, the city-state’s Straits Times has reported. According to the news report that quoted Neil McGregor, Executive Director of the Singapore LNG Corporation, Samsung won because its “novel and efficient design which minimised the footprint of the new terminal” that freed up land that could be used for future expansion. The deal is for Samsung to handle engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the slated project to be hoisted on Jurong Island. The total cost of the project according to the report is $1.03billion. Singapore is trying to wean its dependence away from external sources of LNG, which, at present, principally come from Indonesia’s Natuna gas sources, following an island-wide blackout in 2003 due to a technical fault.
